The Cardturner by Louis Sachar

Is an exceptional novel with an excellent storyline that Louis Sachar writes in an elegant, entrancing style, similar to his bestseller 'Holes' (my most favourite book ever!). If the thought of a book that's plot revolves around Bridge doesn't appeal to you, then the enticing idea of another book by an author as prolific as Sachar should.

The main character, Alton, is brought up making phone calls to his great-uncle Lester who, his mother insists, is Alton's favourite uncle, despite the fact that Alton has never met his elusive, RICH, and powerful Uncle Lester. Uncle Lester is so rich that he doesn't have to be nice to anyone (and he uses this to his advantage). When news comes in about Lester's health deteriorating and, through complications with diabetes, becoming blind, Uncle Lester makes a strange request - for Alton to become his cardturner.

A brilliant story of twists and family mysteries. 9/10!
